This is the official website for J.R. Oppenheim, a journalist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
J.R. currently works as a digital news producer at KOB Eyewitness News 4, an NBC-affiliated television station in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His primary duties involve managing the station’s website and its social media accounts. He ensures reporters’ stories are web-ready, writes news and sports stories himself, and edits and posts video from the station’s broadcasts.
Previously, J.R. was the the managing editor for the New Mexico Daily Lobo, the student-run newspaper at the University of New Mexico. He was hired an assistant sports editor and served the paper’s basketball beat writer. He eventually moved up the ranks to the No. 2 position on the staff. He also coordinated a redesign effort for the Daily Lobo’s website in 2013. In the process he completed a dual degree program, majoring in journalism and history with a minor in political science.
Prior to his return to college, J.R. worked for two different newspapers: the Star-Herald in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and the Alamogordo Daily News in Alamogordo, New Mexico. At the Star-Herald J.R. worked as a pagination technician in 2000 before a promotion to sports reporter in 2002 introduced him to the world of sports. He served as the main wrestling beat writer but covered other sports, such as football, basketball, volleyball, golf, soccer and tennis.
After his five-year run at the Star-Herald, J.R. moved to Alamogordo to become the ADN’s staff photographer. There he photographed general assignment and spot news, feature stories and sporting events. Twice he helped the ADN as the interim sports editor, contributed as a sportswriter and photographed nearly every sports event the newspaper covered from 2006-11.
